Helpful homework tip

Filed under: Homework — tifftai @ 9:59 pm

Here’s a tip for writing out your homework, especially for those who have trouble with neatness or simply prefer to type.

Sunshine!

This tip is brought to you by Jake Miller! Jake downloaded the homework (which is just a Word Doc) and typed his answers directly into the homework sheet and printed it out. Fancy!

Magneto’s Iron Extraction

Filed under: Electricity and magnetism — tifftai @ 5:31 pm

Magneto is a comic book character in the X-Men series.  His superpower allows him to control magnetism.  There is a scene is the movie X-Men 2 where Magneto draws iron particles out a security guard’s body in order to form little bullets to break him out of his glass prison.  Now, the unfortunate man had an unusual amount of iron in him which allowed Magneto to use him as an escape tool.

Are you worried that this might happen to you?  Well, don’t worry.  Humans only have about 4.5grams of iron which is found mostly in our hemoglobin, the molecule that binds oxygen to our red blood cells.

Here’s an activity if you’d like to experiment with extracting iron out of your food.  It looks pretty interesting.  If you want to find donut magnets, try Radio Shack.  Otherwise, the other materials are common kitchen/supermarket items.

Fractal_1 Fractal_2

You must check out this website. Some awesome fractal images! And you can zoom in on some of them. I came across this because I was looking for images of circuits. There is a section on “Mechanical fractals” which is where I found an image for your class work.

Questions about fractals? Here’s a great website for kids. She says that adults are free to enjoy this site also. :)

The Ohm Zone

Filed under: Electricity and magnetism — tifftai @ 2:35 pm

Here’s a website that allows you to build different kinds of circuits and measure voltage, current, and resistance. It’s pretty easy to use. Just click on the “Hand” for different online exhibits. We won’t cover all the topics but definitely the difference between series and parallel circuits and the effects on resistance and voltage on these circuits. http://www.article19.com/shockwave/oz.htm

Cow Power!

Filed under: Electricity and magnetism — tifftai @ 1:59 pm

Moo! It’s a battery run by the bacteria living in a cow! Last year, researchers found they could generate electricity using the bacteria that occur naturally inside a cow’s first of 4 stomachs. This chamber is known as the rumen. The bovine stomach bacteria can run devices known as microbial fuel cells (MFCs) which are powered by electrons released by the bacteria feeding on organic material. Researchers found that a pint of a cow’s bacteria-infested rumen juice produced about 600 millivolts of electricity. The output is about half the voltage of a rechargeable AA-size battery. Although this research is quite exciting, scientists are not sure whether microbial fuel cell power as a form of clean, renewable energy can be scaled so that we could reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. But it’s still pretty cool! Here’s the article link.
